Originally founded by two Registered Nurses, who were working as clinical nurse educators at a private college, were able to see inadequacies in both support worker education and support provision, particularly in mental health support and complex care. Utilising their many years of experience and extensive education, Queensland Health Academy Care Service (QHACS) was born.
QHACS is extensively operated by nurses, with significant experience across disability, aged care, emergency, mental health, and critical care. Even our administration staff are nurses!
With a small head office team without layers and layers of management that you might find in other organisations, the nurses set out to find the best in the industry. The best are highly experienced, highly trained and with a good rapport with participants.
Our team of nurses, working as support staff, are able to provide support across all aspects of care where required. With our experience and training, utilising qualified nurses, we are able to specialise in complex care and mental health supports.
As evidence shows, people have better health and support outcomes when a nurse is involved in their care! We are yet to find another NDIS company in QLD that supplies nurses as support workers and only charges the support work line items! The company absorbs the additional expense in employing nurses rather than support workers.
It is important to ask your provider the experience and qualifications of the support staff working with you.
QHACS is a part of Queensland Health Academy, a company that provides training to the community services sector and those wanting to enter the community services sector.
This allows us to ensure our support staff have the required skills and qualifications to undertake support work. We have a large learning laboratory with support equipment that would make some colleges jealous!
Training and assessment are conducted by experienced nurses who hold their training qualifications.
To empower and enable participants to meet and exceed their wants, needs and goals in a manner that is flexible, responsible and is of quality. To ensure participants are treated with respect and in a holistic manner that compliments their autonomy and independence. For participants to achieve their full potential and live a life of their choosing.
QHACS is committed to providing quality, evidence-based and inclusive support services of each individual client to maintain and strengthen independence. We offer a collaborative approach in enabling each participant in achieving their wants, needs and goals. To achieve autonomy and self-directed supports. The participant in the decision maker.
Queensland Health Academy Care Service (QHACS) believes in ensuring clients have support to achieve and maintain independence and ensure they are the decision makers in their life.
QHACS is of the belief that nursing should be apart of support services provided to clients but not at an additional cost than that of a disability support worker.
We are of the belief that a client should be supported in a holistic manner that covers all aspects of living a healthy and productive life.
Specialist Nurses provide direct support and supervision to nurse support workers employed within our organisation. This is to ensure that not only are nurse support workers trained to meet the support requirements of our clients but to ensure clients have their medical needs, wants and goals achieved.
Every reputable world-wide study shows that clients have better support and care outcomes when registered nurses are involved.
Nurses are trained to write support plans to cover all aspects of a person’s life and to meet their wants, needs and goals.
QHACS is not of the belief that a clinical or medical model should be involved. We believe the social support model is incredibly important but should be supplemented with qualified people overseeing the support of clients.
Typically, a team of support workers with be overseen by a Registered and Enrolled Nurse Care Coordinator.
These Care Coordinators are experience nurses with training qualifications. They will ensure support staff are trained in a variety of different areas to meet the needs of clients.
All tasks required of support workers including but not limited to assisting with showers, feeding, medication, PEG and IDC care will be only provided by our support workers that have completed training and assessment within these areas.
All staff will complete regular competency assessment which is recorded and verified within their “Competency Log Book”
